White Stone Junction (Buffalo & Shenandoah Railroad, No. 23)
In Flanagan's work, Stations, of which White Stone Junction is a part, the artist presents trompe l'oeil images of photo album pages that have been ostensibly written on and show creases from handling. The images are of waystations along two imaginary Virginia railroad lines, the Buffalo & Shenandoah and the Powhatan; the images and text work together to create a fictional visual narrative that mixes text and an instantly recognizable aspect of America's landscape. With Stations, Flanagan combines modern artistic sensibilities with a nostalgic view of the America's past.
