Great American Perspective, 1973

As part of the Op Art movement, Ahlgren became known for prints that used color and shape to manipulate a viewer's perception of space and movement in a static image. Much like the railroads, engineering effective Op Art images that distort perception and perspective require careful construction and a good deal of technical skill. Here, Ahlgren takes an iconic railroad image - rails leading into the distance - and subverts its historical references with strong colors and modern lines in the Op Art style.
