Receipt for Purchase of a Slave

This 1855 receipt describes the purchase of a young female slave and her two children.

$1350 Received of David Little Thirteen hundred and fifty dollars in full payment for a Negro Woman by the name of Mary aged about 23 years old and her two Girl children the oldest by the name of Cynthia aged 3 years old the other by the name of Alice aged 1 1/2 years old the [[unclear]] right and title of said Negroes I warrant [?] and forever defend free from the claim of all persons whatever Slaves for life and sound [?] in body and in mind Given under my hand and seal this day and date above [[unclear]].
