Katherine (Kady) Burnap Faulkner
American, 1901-1977
Lime Mill, 1935
Born in Syracuse, New York, Faulkner was a dedicated instructor in UNL's Art Department for twenty years. Faulkner was also active in national artists' organizations and worked for the WPA during the Great Depression, completing a number of works, including End of the Trail, a mural in the Valentine, Nebraska, post office. Faulkner painted in the regionalist style, capturing the history and feel of rural life and the Great Plains. Railroads carried the vast output of mills of all sorts (lime, steel, flour), yet many of these enterprise stood quiet in the Depression. Here, as in Slag Heaps, the figure of a single human is overshadowed by the larger industrial landscape.
