A photographer of American spaces and people, Riss takes the monumental architecture of a railroad station and juxtaposes a passenger, personalizing a grand space. Like Ruzicka and Glintenkamp, Riss was inspired by the architecture of railroads and their built environments, but was clearly moved to include a figure that would have been familiar to audiences of his time; to modern viewers, the figure may look dated or quaint, emphasizing a perceived link between railroad travel and our past.
