Letter from William H. Seevers to Thomas M. Isett and William C. Brewster, November 12, 1860

In this letter from November 12, 1860, William H. Seevers writes to Thomas M. Isett and William C. Brewster discussing the sale of their land near Oskaloosa, Iowa. He states that Reed was correct in his belief that "our land could not be avoided" by the railroad construction, but believes that they must also consider the desires of the stockholders.

Yours is at hand.

I enclose plat of our land road and depot grounds as proposed to be given by me, also deeds for right of way and depot grounds.

Mr. Reed is right in supposing our land could not be avoided if we looked alone to the interest of the company. But we are building the road by subscription. The depot must be located to suit the stockholders to a certain extent or they will refuse "material aid." Their views must be consulted. Hence what is called the Roop route was run. That would bring the depot near his mill about 10500 feet or more north of our land. Two of the directors are in favour of that location and will no doubt endeavour to so shape things go as to get the stockholders to change the location as now made. For these reasons and others I consented to make the offer I have. The yellow mark designates land given by [Moulgoureny]. The passenger depot will be on that and the freight on ours. Mr. Smith will explain matters fully to you hence I have not written more fully.

Will you see him on his return from Iowa City as these papers were to have been forwarded by him but could not be prepared.
