Cow 13 and Train Number 3, Shawsville, Virginia, 1955 (printed 1987)

For four years, from 1955-1959, Link documented the trains and towns of Virginia's Norfolk and Western Railway, providing a record of the nation's last steam railroad and the small towns it ran through. Link's black and white images were planned for maximum effect according to time of day, rail schedule, and location and remain some of the most striking photographs of modern railroads. Beyond pictures of trains and towns, Link's work included capturing images of firemen, brakemen, and coaling towers - pieces of steam railroad life that no longer exist.
