Letter from Samuel B. Reed to Wife and Family, October 27, 1864

In this letter from October 27, 1864, Samuel Reed writes to his wife and family noting his new assignment to "go west and explore on horseback the route out of the desert."

Last evening after I had closed my accounts with President Young and made every arrangement to start for the states this morning, a telegram came requesting me to go west and explore on horseback the route out of the desert. I have been very busy all day trying to get a horse and man to accompany me but thus far am unsuccessful and from present appearances think I shall leave for the east in the morning and try the desert next season.
