Traffic, 7th Ave. Subway, about 1935
After finding fame as a painter and illustrator early in his career, by the 1930s, Glintenkamp was one of the nation's foremost woodcut artists. Glintenkamp's work reveals his sympathy for the American working class, with subject matter including slums, workers at play, and Manhattan cityscapes. In this image, Glintenkamp renders the commonplace act of riding the subway to work and includes a rider reading The Daily Worker, the New York Communist Party newspaper.
