Rainbows on a Train, 1980
British painter and printmaker Patrick Hughes has been linked to both the Pop Art and Surrealist movements, becoming recognized for his play with perspective, illusion, and color. In Hughes' Rainbow images, rainbows transcend their illusory, temporary character and become part of the built environment in ways that challenge their very nature. In this print, rainbows are the stuff of modern transportation and commerce, juxtaposing nature and technology in a very whimsical manner.
