Letter from Samuel B. Reed to Wife and Family, May 20, 1868

In this letter from May 20, 1868, Samuel Reed writes to his wife and family describing his continuing negotiations with Brigham Young.

Two days since, I wrote you, my first letter from here. Since then I have been negotiating with the Mormons through their chief, Brigham Young, for building a portion of the road through this country. Elegance and diplomacy are good qualifications. I never approach without due form and show him the greatest respect. We have agreed in general, some minor details yet to be closed. Last evening, I was invited to ride with President Young. He drove me in his carriage to various parts of the city, showed the improvements that have been made in the past three years, etc. Many a man would be proud to receive such attention from him. Interest on his part, no doubt, prompts them. I hope to leave here tomorrow for the east. The trip has done me good. I have not felt so free from care and anxiety since leaving home.
