Letter from Samuel B. Reed to Wife and Family, May 18, 1868

In this letter from May 18, 1868, Samuel Reed writes to his wife and family describing his trip to Salt Lake City and his business dealings with Brigham Young. Reed also describes the growing young city and notes that he has purchased a city lot, which he hopes will appreciate quickly.

I arrived here Saturday evening, after six days in the stage coach. Found roads from Fort Bridger west almost impassible. Sunday I attended church. I was warmly greeted by all the Salt Lake people with whom I have formerly been acquainted. On Monday morning I called upon President Young and had a long and interesting conversation. He was, or appeared to be, really pleased to see me in Salt Lake once more. Since the first call, I have met him repeatedly. The business man alone is met on such occasions.

I have not yet closed a contract with him but think I shall before leaving the valley. Salt Lake City has improved materially since 1865. Fine large blocks of business houses and numerous residences have been built. I have purchased a lot in Salt Lake City which I trust will be worth a little more than I have to pay for it. For two days past rain has been falling in torrents, the valleys are full of water. On the mountains which surround Salt Lake like the various circles in the theatre, the storm has been snow; and all are covered down nearly to the valley with a deep mantle of snow which makes a magnificent view. The valley covered with a rank mass of dark green vegetation contrasts most beautifully with the pure snow of the mountain sides.
