In this letter from July 27, 1868, Samuel Reed writes to his wife and family describing his standing in the Union Pacific Railroad Company. Sidney Dillon and Thomas Durant "propose to continue me as General Superintendent of Construction," which Reed considers a satisfying resolution to the issue.

July 27, 1868

I arrived here Saturday evening from Salt Lake City to meet Messrs. Dillon and Durant. My matters have not been fully decided but look much brighter than I expected. They propose to continue me as General Superintendent of Construction, all construction matters to be under my direction. A few days will settle the question one way or the other.

Mr. Boyle has just got a settlement and received his money. There has been a great deal of talk about settling with the various contractors and, in the and they are settled with as I advise.
