In this letter from November 17, 1868, Samuel Reed writes to his wife and family updating them on the progress of the Union Pacific line.

The grading is thus far out of the way and, I trust, will be kept clear of the track, at least, I shall do all in my power to hurry it through. Ten days of good weather and all will be clear to the heavy work in Weber Canon below my office. Carmichael with all his forces, about 1500 men, has just moved up. Other parties also are on the work west of Bear River.
