Letter from Jennie Reed to Samuel B. Reed, April 18, 1867

In this letter from April 18, 1867, Jennie Reed writes to her husband, Samuel Reed, on the eve of the anniversary of their wedding day telling him how much she misses him. She insists he be careful about his health and write to her more often.

My Dearest Samuel.

This is the "Eve" of the Anniversary of our Wedding Day. I scarcely know how to spend the morrow without you. Yet as I have kept a number alone in the past years, suppose I shall keep the coming one and survive the sorrow of your absence. It was quite a temptation to join Mr. Benedict's company and go out to keep the day with you, but could not. I regret I did not give him some of cousin Adda's wedding cake and at the same time send you some. His visit was so short that I entirely overlooked the [cake]. We have not yet heard from cousin since she left. Yesterday we were much surprised in seeing Martha Kimball and baby here at the door for a visit. Mr. K. is in Chicago trying to get a living and she is going to go there to assist him. She says he is entirely steady and willing to do. Mr. K Did not dare to go to Omaha without being sure of koving having something to do. Or had more money. Had he better stay where he is, if they can live at all. She will not remain here long I presume. I am very busy at my spring work.

I only feel lonely when too weary to do any thing [sic] more. And then I do miss my absent loved one. You must be careful of your health. Write soon, and oftener. The children join me in kisses to Papa.
