Letter from Joshua M. Shaffer to Samuel B. Reed, January 4, 1864

In this letter from January 4, 1864, Joshua M. Shaffer, Surgeon of the Board of Enrollment for the First Congressional District of Iowa, writes to Samuel Reed informing him that his name has been successfully stricken from the draft enrollment list in Burlington, Iowa upon receipt of proof that his name is on the enrollment list in Joliet, Illinois.

Saml. B. Reed Esqr. Civil Engineer Joliet Ills: Sir:

I have the honor to ackowledge the receipt of certificate of Abel Longworth, Capt. & Prov. Marshal of 6^th Dist. of Illinois, that you are enroled [sic] , and liable to draft in his district.

This evidence of your non-residence in Burlington Sp. Des Moines Co. Iowa, being deemed satisfactory by the Board, your name has been stricken from the enrolment [sic] in the 1^st Cong. Dist. of Iowa.
