A Deception And A Snare

Railroads presented political controversies at the very local level, in city hall meetings and town councils over the location of their depots, the kind of service they might run, and a host of other social issues.

A DECEPTION AND A SNARE

There is no likelihood that the railroad companies or the Union Depot company would accept the terms of the ordiance now before the city council. Their representatives state that they will not. Then why should the ordinance be passed and an election held under it?

The present ordinance is being advocated by men who opposed the only practicable plan to get a depot on Tenth street. They support this ordinance as [sham], or as a device to hide their real motives. They favor this ordinance in the hope that it will be rejected by the railroad companies, as it would be in all human probability.

The men who killed the only feasible ordinance might as well allow the funeral to occur and not make a pretense of resurrection.

The depot ordinance was defeated and Bemis and the few councilmen who brought about the defeat will be compelled to bear the responsibility.
