Pennsylvania Station, New York

Drahomir Josef Ruzicka
Czech, 1870-1960
Pennsylvania Station, New York, undated

A leading figure in the world of amateur photography, Ruzicka was famous for his images of New York City, most notably Pennsylvania Station and scenes of busy thoroughfares and parks. Like the photograph here, Ruzicka's images of train stations turn them into modern cathedrals, linking the new purpose and architecture of grand construction to traditional ideas about the uses of grandiose design.
