In this letter from February 26, 1867, Samuel Reed writes to his wife and family in Illinois describing the recent delay in mail service due to a severe winter storm stopping traffic on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad.

I have not written for six days knowing that it was impossible for mails to go east via Chicago & Northwestern Road. The last mail from the east was on Monday the 18th.

Trains on our road have been suspended since Wednesday last. Cleared the last drift out yesterday and alright now. The storm has been the most severe of the season, and if the snow goes off with rain, immense damage must be done to railroad bridges throughout the west.
